University of Nevada - Reno, John Tulloch Business Building

Reno, NV

The John Tulloch Business Building anchors a major new development at the University of Nevada, Reno that establishes a bridge between the campus and the City of Reno. Serving as the new home for the College of Business, the 128,000-square-foot, five-story facility was designed to foster connection, collaboration, and community engagement through a highly transparent and accessible architectural approach.

LUMA’s lighting design supports a welcoming learning environment by prioritizing flexibility, visual comfort, and engagement throughout the facility. Classrooms are intentionally simple yet highly functional, with integrated scene control systems that adapt to lectures, presentations, and group discussions. Across auditoriums, computer labs, social spaces, and outdoor terraces, lighting strategies enhance usability while reinforcing the building’s open and inviting character.

Interior and exterior lighting were carefully integrated to support intuitive wayfinding and create a warm nighttime presence at building entries. Daylight-responsive controls and high-efficiency lighting systems contribute to the project’s LEED Gold certification while supporting occupant comfort and long-term energy performance.

Balancing contemporary architectural expression with the university’s established campus character, the project creates a dynamic academic environment that remains active, connected, and welcoming throughout the day and into the evening.
