Anchor House

Berkeley, CA

Anchor House was designed specifically for transfer students from low-income backgrounds and first-generation college students. This 500,000-square-foot building provides convenient access to university facilities and community resources, addressing a common issue of affordability and long commutes.

Lighting plays a central role in shaping comfort and belonging. The design features welcoming, softly lit spaces to create a residential atmosphere. Daylight fills the double-height entry lobby. The interiors have layered lighting, concealed lights sources, and vertical illumination to support visual comfort as residents move throughout different spaces.

The project was entirely funded by a generous, confidential donor. Proceeds from Anchor House’s net operating revenue will fund annual scholarships for Pell Grant-eligible students based on academic and personal achievement.
