PAE provided mechanical and electrical design for the conversion of Jeld-Wen field, from a baseball stadium into a new soccer stadium for the Portland Timbers. Luma, a division of PAE, provided lighting design for the project. The unique shape of the early 1900’s building challenged the project team to provide inventive solutions during the conversion. Due to the geometry of the existing overhang, PAE had to creatively place field lighting in order to meet MLS broadcast illumination standards, while minimizing glare for players and spectators. The conversion was awarded a LEED Silver rating and the facility now features many sustainable elements including low-flow plumbing fixtures, dual flush water closets and urinals, substantially reduced energy use for field lighting, and a highly efficient variable refrigerant flow (VFR) system with heat recovery. The VRF system also allows heat to be shared around the building by removing heat from one space and providing it to another as needed.
