The signature element of Portland International Airport is the stunning 2.7 acre glass canopy covering the roadway and the walkways connecting the parking structure and terminal. Our challenge was to present a bright, inviting environment to the traveler while meeting budget, energy, maintenance, and FAA-imposed control tower glare requirements. These restrictions encouraged clarity in design. Our solution consisted of expressing the canopy structure, celebrating the truss springpoints, and finally, to illuminate the roadway below.
