Populus Hotel

Seattle, WA

Populus Hotel is an award-winning project that transforms an existing mass timber structure into a refined, sustainable luxury hotel. The lighting is designed as a subtle partner to the architecture, revealing texture, structure, and craft throughout the building. The lighting design enhances the inherent qualities of the historic structure, carefully illuminating exposed timber ceilings, beams, and columns while meeting preservation requirements. Together, the lighting and architecture create an experience that feels warm and grounded for all visitors.

A layered lighting strategy was employed across public spaces that combine concealed architectural lighting with decorative elements to create depth, rhythm, and moments of emphasis. Linear grazing along columns and walls highlights material texture and verticality, while concealed uplighting at stairs, planters, and architectural features add a sense of quiet drama. Low-profile luminaires and concealed sources are thoughtfully integrated to minimize visual clutter and glare. Tunable, scene-based controls allow spaces to transition seamlessly from day to evening and adapt to a range of programming and events. In the guestroom corridors, a restrained composition of recessed and suspended luminaires establishes a calm, intuitive path of travel, balancing wayfinding, safety, and visual comfort.
