Embarcadero Center Lobbies

San Francisco, CA

The Embarcadero Center project enhances exposure to the existing space that is currently hidden on the second floor of a retail center. A new feature to the lobby are the 250 large "ribbons" made of fiberglass reinforced concrete, which was designed to create a curtain around the heart of the building. While the ribbons are solid and immovable, the lighting scheme dematerializes them helping them to seem soft and fluid. In addition to illumination from behind, lights concealed in a cove at the ceiling’s edge and spots inserted in a slot running down its center wash the ribbons from above making the installation glow from within. The overall goal to provide a welcoming atmosphere and better visibility to tenants and guests was more than achieved.
