Set in a windswept volcanic landscape among pine groves, the Unitarian Universalist Retreat Center needed lighting design that supported a contrast of textures. Strategic placement of site lighting along pathways and the building perimeter provides visual comfort and minimizes light trespass at night. A combination of in-grade fixtures and bollards create pools of low-level light for public gatherings. Inside, the lighting design incorporates the layering of sunlight across the warm tones of wood and basalt rock. We sought to capture the ephemeral qualities of light over time and tie them into the various functions of the spaces. Daylighting provides energy savings and visual comfort in the gathering hall, sanctuary, and circulation spaces. The project is the first church in the world to attain Earth Advantage Platinum certification.
