We harness exterior and interior lighting at the LEED Platinum OHSU Knight Cancer Research Building to welcome, teach, navigate, and rejuvenate. The design serves many different functions and has many forms. The exterior lighting is concealed to softly announce the entrance and to provide an inviting lobby, and it continues as a guide along the waterfront. The sawtooth façade provides a lantern of colors to indicate the types of cancer being researched within the adjacent labs. The laboratory and auditorium lighting allow for optimal flexibility according to the various needs of the healthcare institute. The interior lighting ranges from a playful rhythm of indirect and direct linear lights in places like the pantry to soft or hidden luminaires and use of daylighting throughout the main levels to accentuate warm materials, signage, and walkways.
